Privacy Policy

1. Who runs Walkerset

Walkerset is a small independent project operated by [OPERATOR NAME] ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the service does with your information. If anything here is unclear, ask us before using the service.

2. What we collect

Location

With your permission, the app reads your position from your browser's geolocation feature. Before it is sent anywhere, it is rounded to four decimal places — roughly an 11-metre grid — so it identifies a rough spot, not a doorstep.

The rounded position is held in the server's memory only and shared with other people currently using the app. It is never written to a database or a file. When you close the app, lose connection, or go idle, your marker stays on the map greyed out and fading for up to 30 minutes so people can see you were just there — then it is discarded. Ghost mode removes you immediately instead. We keep no location history whatsoever — not even for you.

If you decline location access, you can place yourself on the map manually instead.

The profile you choose

A display name, an emoji avatar, a colour, a "vibe", and an optional short note. You pick all of these, and you can change them at any time.

If you sign in with Google

Signing in is optional — the app is fully usable as a guest. If you do sign in, Google gives us your account identifier, email address, name, and profile photo URL. We store these on our server to recognise you when you return. We request no other Google data, and we have no access to your Gmail, contacts, files, or calendar.

If you use it as a guest

Your browser generates a random identifier and keeps it in local storage on your device. It is not linked to any real-world identity.

Technical information

Our server and hosting provider process your IP address to deliver the service and keep it secure, as any web server must. We do not use this to build a profile of you.

Usage analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit and which parts of the site they use. It records things like the pages you open, roughly where you are in the world (a country or city, worked out from your IP address), your device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site.

Your map position is never sent to Google Analytics. The precise location the app uses to place you on the map is a separate system entirely — it stays in the server's memory and goes nowhere near our analytics. We use analytics to count visits, not to follow individuals, and we do not use it for advertising or link it to your account.

3. What other people can see

Anyone using Walkerset at the same time as you can see:

SharedYour display name, emoji, colour, vibe, optional note, your rounded position, and whether you signed in with Google
Only if you opt inYour Google profile photo — this is off by default and your emoji is used instead
Never sharedYour email address, your Google account identifier, your exact position, or any history of where you have been

Please treat anything you put in your display name or note as public. Do not put a phone number, an address, or anything else there you would not want a stranger to read.

4. How long we keep things

LocationMemory only. Your last position lingers on the map for up to 30 minutes after you close the app, then is discarded. Never written to disk.
AccountUntil you delete it. "Delete account" in the app erases your record, including your email, immediately.
Guest identityOn your device only. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Session cookie30 days, or until you sign out.
Analytics cookiesUp to 2 years, set by Google Analytics. Clearing your browser data removes them.
Analytics dataHeld by Google under our retention setting, up to 14 months.
Server logsShort-term, for security and reliability.

5. Cookies

A session cookie, set only if you sign in, which keeps you signed in. It is HttpOnly (unreadable by scripts), cryptographically signed, and contains nothing but an internal account reference and an expiry date.

Google Analytics cookies (_ga and _ga_*), which let us tell a returning visitor from a new one so our visit counts mean something. They hold a randomly generated identifier, not anything about who you are.

There are no advertising cookies, and nothing here is used to build a profile of you or shared with advertisers. If you would rather not be counted, see Your choices below.

6. Other services involved

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.

7. Your choices

Depending on where you live you may have additional legal rights over your personal data, including rights of access, correction, erasure, portability, and objection. Contact us to exercise them.

8. Children

Walkerset is not intended for anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

9. Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Session cookies are signed and verified in a way designed to resist tampering. Sign-in tokens are verified directly with Google. Because location is never persisted, there is no location database that could be breached.

No service can promise perfect security. Share only what you are comfortable sharing with strangers.

10. Changes

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top. Significant changes will be made clear in the app.
